Jack Parker‘s resume speaks for itself! He was the original guitar player for the David Crowder Band, he currently plays in The Digital Age, and he just got off tour with Chris Tomlin. I personally grew up playing his music in church every week, so it was an honor to have him on The Tip Jar! So much wisdom in this conversation. I can’t wait for you guys and gals to hear it!
Philip Ellis has played drums at The Austin Stone for a LONG time! He is not only an incredible drummer, but he is a videographer, and an Ableton Live Master! In the past 8 years or so, Bethel Music has become the leading voice in worship music in America. One of the people behind the impact that they are making world wide is Michael Pope. Michael has written some of the best guitar lead lines in worship music today. His influence on the guitar world is undeniable. Not only is he one of the leading voices in guitar gear, tone, and effects, but his heart for the Lord is as genuine as it gets! Such a fun conversation! He answers some “Fan Questions”, we talk about guitar tone, plus he gives some tips on being an effective MD (Musical Director).
Are you involved in some type of worship ministry? Are you married or in a relationship? Have you ever wondered what your significant other thinks about it? Ministry is something that (at times) can be taxing on a marriage or relationship.
In Episode 27, my friend Jamie Ivey gives us an interesting Point of view on worship ministry. Jamie is the host of a Podcast called “The Happy Hour with Jamie Ivey”. Her podcast is currently ranked NUMBER 6 on iTunes in the Religion & Spirituality category! She has also been married to a worship pastor for 16 years now. I love her wisdom on the subject of relationships within worship ministry. Such a GREAT conversation!
If you are a musician and have ever tried to buy a touring case for any of your equipment, then you have probably heard of Brady Cases. Brady Bruton is one of the best custom case builders there is! If you can think of it, Brady can build it! Brady has built cases for Katy Perry, Chicago, Switchfoot, and almost every touring worship musician out there!
Brady is also a worship musician! Brady’s love for guitar and music is what caused him to start Brady Cases 10 years ago. In this episode we discuss Buisiness, Gear, and worship culture!
Episode 25 was an extremely fun conversation for me! I Love Leadership and I’m a huge Clay Scroggins fan! Clay is the lead pastor at North Point Community Church in Alpharetta, Georgia. He serves under the leadership of Andy Stanley. The North Point Campus runs over 12,000 people on the weekends.
Clay is also the author of the book “How to Lead When You’re Not in Charge: Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority”. His book (which is awesome) just came out this week!
Leadership is a huge part of Worship Leadership! Clay is one of the best leadership authorities out there! So we talk about leading from a position of influence. You can lead! Even if you aren’t “The Boss”.
It took me 24 episodes to finally get some Female Power on the Tip Jar Podcast! This episode is just flat out awesome! Jaleesa McCreary works at The Austin Stone Community Church in Austin, TX. Although her official title is Director of Events, she also helps in leading worship on a regular basis. They put out a record this past year called This Glorious Grace. Jaleesa sings the title track, plus other songs on that album!
In this Episode she shares her story about having vocal surgery, we talk about her being a female in a male dominated culture, she gives great tips on singing in the background, and much more! Feel free to follow her on Instagram! Hope you enjoy!
About 12 years ago I saw Jimmie Ingram play guitar for the first time. My jaw hit the floor! Jimmie is a worship guitarist w/ Jazz roots. You don’t see many guys playing worship music that can play the intricacies of Jazz chords within the worship style. Jimmie is also legally blind, although you wouldn’t know it if you were to see him play! This is a fun conversation! I get to catch up w/ my friend, but he also gives us some incredible advice on how we can improve as musicians! Check it out!
Episode 22 is a little different. We are 22 Episodes into this podcast so we decided to flip the script. Instead of me interviewing a friend of mine, I decided to get a Podcast friend of mine (from episode #15) to interview me! We talk about life, owning girl’s jeans in college, and the reasons I decided to start Tip Jar Podcast. It was fun answering questions this time around. Enjoy!
Finally! We are talking BASS! Its all about that Bass yall! My friend Rich Gilliland is a KILLER musician. He has some serious chops. He can also play any and all genres of music. He started on stand up bass, he has played R&B/Hip Hop w/ Christian artist KJ-52, He has played Rock w/ Christian Band Pillar. He has worked for “Church on the Move” and currently works w/ LifeChurch! If that isn’t a killer resume then I don’t know what is!
In this episode, Rich tells his story. We talk about Bass tone, On boarding musicians, the audition process within LifeChurch, and Captain Crunch Berries!
So this past week I got the opportunity to hang out with some incredible musicians/people from Life.Church . One of those people being Brandon. Brandon is not only an amazingly talented vocalist/worship leader, but he is also a fun guy to sit around the fire, crack jokes, and tell stories with. If I had to describe him in one word, I would probably use the word “Genuine”. Brandon loves Jesus and that is evident to anyone who knows him, but he is also upfront about his mistakes and how God is redeemer in his life.
On Easter this past year (2017) Life.Church started a series called “Playlist”. Using scripture, they took secular songs and pulled the Gospel out of them. On Easter Sunday (Super Bowl Sunday for ministers), Brandon did a cover of Million Reasons by Lady Gaga that was used at all of the Life.Church campuses. After that Sunday it went viral! You can watch it for yourself and understand why.
This is a great interview! I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!
This was an interview that I had been looking for a long time! Josh is a guy that I respect on so many different levels. He is in a different league when it comes to business and leadership! We talk about his time in the church as a worship leader, his story of how he started JHS Pedals, and he gives some great insight into worship/music culture!
Have you ever seen an Idea or a Brand that seemed to blow up over night? When Lance started GearTalk, never in his wildest dreams did he think it would be as big as it is today! It is a HUGE social platform! He administrates Facebook Forums, Classified Forums, and his GearTalk instagram account currently has over 150,ooo followers!
In this episode, Lance shares his story of how he got started in the music business, how the idea for GearTalk came to him, and how God has affected his life in the past 18 months! If you like looking at or talking about Gear, you’ll love this episode!

In this episode, Stephen just oozes w/ wisdom for the musicians out there. He also talks about his personal journey w/ the Lord. I love hearing how God is working through His people in the ways that He has wired them to be. Enjoy! I know I did!
The man, the myth, the legend… Chad Brooks. Chad and I go WAY back! Chad’s resume is crazy. He has worked as a Sound Engineer, Worship Pastor, Pastor, Podcaster, and the list goes on! Chad taught me a TON when I started The Tip Jar Podcast! I’m thankful for his friendship and his wisdom. Every conversation w/ Chad is fun and this episode is no different.
In the years that I have been in ministry, one question that seems to continue to pop up is “Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?” We could chase that question down the theological rabbit hole for days if we wanted to, but in this episode, my friend Shane Longoria shares a story about what happened in his first year of marriage. His newly wedded wife (Kelly) was abducted, shot in the head, and left for dead. However God had a different plan!
I love Shane’s take on his view of God as a Worshipper following this tragedy. I hope that Shane’s story can help shape your view of God as a worship musician, worship leader, etc.
“God is faithful” – Shane Longoria
When talking about guitarist in the worship world, there is one name that always comes up. James Duke is at the top of most people’s lists for being one the the greatest worship guitarist of today. He has played w/ John Mark McMillan, Matt Redman, Passion, Elevation Worship, and many more.
In this Podcast we talk about a picture that he put on his Instagram from Passion this year that went viral, we talk about gear, and he shares some great wisdom w/ me about being authentic. This was an incredible interview and I hope you get as much out of it as I did!
PS. He also does Guitar Consulting! So if that is something you are interested in, he can hook you up!
When thinking about “worship teams”, the person that usually gets forgotten is the Sound guy. Yet the sound guy is one of the MOST important people on the team! A sound guy can make or break you! In episode 11, my buddy Daniel Martin gives us his 2 cents. Daniel has worked in mega churches, and has also worked for Mercy Me for years! Even though he is a crazy humble guy, and wouldn’t brag on himself, Daniel is the real deal! He can make a band sound CRAZY GOOD!
I love the relationships that God has allowed me to have over the years. Some people are just acquaintances, but others actually influenced my life. Aaron Ivey is the Pastor of Worship at the Austin Stone Community Church. If you aren’t familiar with Austin Stone Worship, you need to start following what they do! The creativity that flows out of that place is rooted in the Word of God and is rich in doctrine and theology. I have known Aaron for right at 15 years now. As a “young buck”, my time spent working with Aaron helped shape me as a follower of Christ and as a musician. Aaron has always been a developer of others and every time I talk to him I am challenged in that area. I hope episode 10 pushes you first to the Word of God, then challenges you to start developing the next generation.
On this episode of the Tip Jar Podcast I get to sit across the table from my good friend, drummer, and graphic designer, Charles Dew! Charles is an incredible creative soul w/ an incredible work ethic. If I had to describe Charles in one word it would be “kind”. This guy loves people well. He is also a Killer drummer! We talk about drums, worship philosophy, and a little Star Wars. Give it a listen!
Let me start off by saying that I am a HUGE Austin Stone Worship fan. I love the creativity that oozes out of that place. I also love the heart behind the leadership there. My guest today is a large piece of the puzzle behind what they do. He is not only the creative genius that comes up with stellar guitar hooks, but he is the audio engineer behind the records that come out of Austin Stone. Kyle Lent is a Husband, father, and humble Beast at what he does! This is a killer 30 min that you won’t wanna miss.
Do you have those people in your life that are just good for the soul? On Episode 7, I get to hang out with my long time friend Clay Caissie. Clay grew up in the Monroe/West Monroe area. His life could be a New York Times best seller if he would write a book. He has Tech’d for Michael W Smith, David Crowder, Chris Tomlin, Ringo Starr (and the All Star Band), and is currently working for “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen! We talk about the road, gear, and Clay tells some funny stories about times spent w/ Crowder and others. This is a Fun Conversation!
I am so thankful that I continuously get opportunities to talk with and glean wisdom from guys that have been in the worship world for a long time! Sometimes we can tend to put these people on pedestals, but I’ve come to find that they are just normal people just like you and me.
In Episode 6, I have a phone conversation with Matt Podesla! Matt has played guitar with artist like John Mark McMillan, Matt Redman, Passion, and Matt Maher. He loves what he does! We talk about Bands we like, gear, and wisdom that he has collected over his tenure in the worship world.
Have you ever talked to someone for the first time and thought that they might just be your twin and you were separated at birth? In Episode 5, Mike Scheuchzer and I become brothers. Its crazy how easy the conversation flows! Things we have in common: Favorite Movie, Favorite Baseball Team, His wife is from Monroe (where i live), etc.
Mike is founding member and guitar player for a band that may possibly have written the most well know Christian song of all time! I can hear that piano into like it was yesterday… “I can only…”
If you have never been to “The Boot” (Louisiana), then you need to make a trip down to the bayou state one day. We have some of the best food, best scenery, and some of the coolest people on the planet! On Episode 3, we get to hear from my good friend Jeremy Lowe. He is on staff at a church in West Monroe, LA called Christ Church. I’m sure you know people who say they love Jesus, and I’m sure you know people that ooze Jesus out of their pores at all times. Jeremy is a guy that is always excited about Jesus. If you see him out and about, he always has a smile on is face! He lives out that scripture that says “The joy of the Lord is my strength.”
Jeremy is a talented singer song writer. In this episode we talk about 90’s bands, Old rock/cover bands we were in, and Jeremy his some great practical advice on how to be a better worship musician. This was a fun interview!
Hey Drummers, Where you at?! In episode 3 we get to hear from my good friend Brent Hammett. He is an incredible dad, graphic designer, and drummer! He has worked with tons of cool people and I have respected him as a drummer for a LONG TIME! We talk about family, gear, and some of the “not to do’s” as a drummer.
So if you are a drummer, you have a drummer on your team that you lead on a regular basis, or a Louisiana Tech fan, You will not want to miss this episode!
When I think about someone that knows a thing or two about guitar gear (Especially in the worship world), the first person that pops into my mind is Dan Burgess. Dan is CEO and founder of a company call This1smyne. In my personal opinion, Dan is one of the best pedal modders out there. He has the best prices too! His flagship overdrive pedal is a dual over drive called “The Pearl“, and it screams! Dan is also one of the administrators of a Facebook group called “Gear Talk: P&W”. This is a community of worship musicians that love to talk about all kinds of craziness that has to do with gear, worship, and players. Its a fun group to keep up with!
Above all of that,Dan Loves Jesus and has a heart to minister to people through his abilities as a guitar player, and as a business man.
In Episode 2, Dan calls in and we have a phone conversation about, trends in Worship music, gear, adoption, and more.
